The Spirit of Life Dragon Boat Program aims to integrate Spirit of Life volunteers with youths with intellectual disabilities. Every year, Spirit of Life operates two dragon boat teams: Spirit of Life and Heep Chi. Spirit of Life is mixed team with Spirit of Life volunteers and youths with intellectual disabilities. Volunteers to clients’ ratio is a minimum of 1 to 1. The Spirit of Life team competes in the Spirit Challenge Division at the July 1 DDRA Canada Day Regatta at Toronto’s Centre Island. The Spirit Challenge Division is a 250m race. Many of our volunteers were groomed from the Heep Chi team. Heep Chi is a pure competitive volunteer team that competes in the Community Division at the July 1 DDRA Canada Day Regatta at Toronto’s Centre Island. Youth with intellectual disabilities who have a minimum of five years of dragon boating experience may be considered to join this team on a case to case basis. The Community Division is a 500m race.
