About Spirit of Life and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Program
Spirit of Life is a registered non-profit organization established to enhance the quality of life for individuals with developmental disabilities or related special needs through education, support, and services.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a self directed development program for young Canadians age 14 to 25. The program equips participants with life skills to make a difference to themselves, their community and their country.
Mental or physical ability or social circumstances should never be a barrier. We at the Spirit of Life are committed to ensuring that youths with developmental disabilities too can set and achieve personal goals in the four areas of the program: Community Service, Skills, Physical Recreation and Adventurous Journey through achieving this award.
Volunteer Testimonials
“I joined this program at first to gain more experience working with youths with developmental disabilities, but I ended up with more than what I expected — new friends and a ton of fun. I definitely did meet my goals; this experience has really given me the chance to learn more about developmental disabilities and how to work with youths who have them.”
“It was very rewarding to see our group of youth’s achievement and proud of the hard work they put in. Also it was great to see how some of the youth changed throughout the program and benefit from it.”
“I honestly have learned so much from this program – I am happy to have the opportunity to have had a part in the growth and self-actualization of the youth. I have learned so much just from seeing how they work on one task, they interact with others, their behaviours, feelings and attitudes change with environment etc. I am especially humbled by the boundless patience and love the parents have shown their children – it really makes me appreciate the people I have in my life more and reminds me to always be kind to others. I enjoyed the program very much and it was honestly an unforgettable experience. Thank you to the organizers and the counsellors for their guidance!”
